Africa unveils its variety of shows

VISITORS will be able to watch the royal dance of Uganda, a traditional Sudanese wedding ceremony, a sword dance from Djibouti and the bronze mask dance from Togo in the Joint-Africa Pavilion at World Expo 2010 Shanghai.
The participating 42 African countries and the African Union yesterday unveiled show plans for their Expo pavilion.
Performances will be a highlight in the pavilion, said Chen Jintian, director of the Joint-Africa Pavilion Management Department of the Expo bureau.
The program will also include a Burundi drum show and an opera from the Seychelles as well as instrumental performances from the Republic of Congo and fashion shows from Niger.
The national dance groups of Rwanda and Cameroon have confirmed their attendance. Other nations will demonstrate weaving, carving, tattooing and traditional handicrafts.
The organizer has arranged a public stage in the pavilion for performances throughout the Expo.
The 26,000-square-meter African Union Pavilion is the biggest overseas pavilion.
The countries aim to showcase their cultures and to overcome negative images by displaying the continent's nature and lifestyles, Nolana Ta-Ama, Togo's ambassador to China and head of the joint African exhibitions, has said.
The pavilion is marked by a huge peach-red cube, resembling the color of African earth and the splendid setting sun.
Against the backdrop will be silhouettes of the spreading baobab tree, known as the tree of life, and those of African wildlife, such as giraffes, elephants, hippos, camels, antelope and many other beasts.
Fifty of the continent's 53 countries will participate in Expo, the largest number of African countries at an Expo. More than 10 are making their Expo debut.
