Aged love rat swindled his way to fortune
AN elderly man who posed as a successful investor to cheat a girlfriend and another girlfriend’s family out of more than 1.6 million yuan (US$229,997) has been sentenced to 13 years behind bars for fraud.
The suspect, surnamed Zhou, who is in his 60s, lived on age benefits in a low rent house with his son, the Putuo District People’s Court heard. But he claimed that he had invested millions of yuan in supermarkets, and that his relatives held high-ranking positions in government departments.
Two women fell into his “love trap,” prosecutors said.
In June 2016, a woman surnamed Liu, in her 50s, was introduced to Zhou after her divorce. Zhou treated her well and she fell in love.
But in a year, she was tricked into giving him more than 1.6 million yuan. He said the money would be invested in lucrative financial products, and that his relatives needed expensive medical treatment.
Liu gave him all of her savings and even mortgaged her home.
It was not till the latter half of 2017, when Zhou cut her off, that she realized she had been cheated.
Previously in September 2016, Zhou had met a young woman surnamed Li, in her 20s, in a hair salon.
He used Liu’s money to romance her. Her parents were convinced that he was an old rich man and they invested 80,000 yuan in an investment project that didn’t exist.
