Ailing girl donates cornea after death
AN ailing nine-year-old girl who died on Tuesday donated her cornea, Shanghai Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital said yesterday.
Yi Yinlin, who celebrated her ninth birthday last month, died due to congenital heart disease and suspected Mediterranean anemia upon delivery. She was seriously sick and needed blood transfusion every week.
Since her mother was a pediatrician, Yi was told about her disease since she was a little child. Her family said Yi had learned from TV news about donating cornea to help other kids years ago.
On Yi's insistence, her parents helped her fill an application form last year-end to donate her cornea after her death. "The donation not only reflects the girl's sacred desire but also the family's gratitude to the help Yi received," Zhang Tingfang, a hospital official, said.
