Air pollution soars as smog shrouds city

Smog rose to dangerous levels in Shanghai this morning with the air quality considered “heavily polluted,” meteorologists said.
The city's air quality index climbed to 224 at 9am and remained at this level through 10am. The concentration of PM2.5 particles reached more than 170 micrograms per cubic meter between 9am and 10am, nearly seven times the 25 micrograms that is considered safe by the World Health Organization.
By 11am, the AQI had dipped slightly to 213 and the PM2.5 density was 163 micrograms per cubic meter.
The air quality was expected to improve this afternoon, according to meteorologists.
A strong cold front will likely bring stronger winds to the city on Wednesday that will likely help disperse the pollution.
The temperature will range between 5 and 14 degrees Celsius today and tomorrow, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said.
