Airport opens new security check area

PASSENGERS boarding domestic flights in Terminal 1 at Pudong International Airport need to go to a new security check area as of today, the airport operator said.

The change does not mean travelers need to arrive for flights earlier and signs give directions to the new security check area.

The new area has 18 security check lines, six more than before. They will no longer be parallel to one another so as to make the best use of space, airport officials said.

Su Weiwei, an official with the Shanghai Airport Authority, said there are also more prominent signs indicating security inspection channels for travelers with special needs.

The new facilities mark the completion of the second phase of renovation efforts to make Terminal 1 more passenger friendly and upgrade its service capacity in preparation for the 2010 Shanghai World Expo.

The airport manager said the original security check area will be converted into snack shops, restaurants and other stores.

Also, police said security checks on roads around the city's two airports will be reinforced during the eight-day National Day holiday.
