AN AIRPORT maintenance worker who stole cash and three gold bars worth more than 550,000 yuan (US$86,136) from a passenger's luggage case on a carousel belt was sentenced to 11 years in prison, the Changning District People's Court said today.

The convict, surnamed Wu, 24, was also fined 50,000 yuan, the court ruled.

Prosecutors said Wu store three gold bars weighing 1.5 kilogram and 15,000 yuan in cash from a checked luggage case on carousel during a routine inspection at Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport on February 6.

The victim found the valuables were missing and reported it to the airport police after the plane arrived at the destination, the court heard.

After watching the surveillance records, police suspected Wu and searched his home where they seized the stolen items the next day.

Wu also confessed he had stolen some portable hard drives from passengers' luggage cases when he was a repair and maintenance worker for carousels at Shanghai Pudong International Airport.
