All Fires Covered

CONSTRUCTION began on a fire station at the 2010 World Expo site yesterday that can deal with fires on land and water.

It is the city's second multi-function fire station and is built especially for the Expo.

The main responsibility of the Linyi fire station, which occupies 4,215 square meters and costs more than 30 million yuan (US$4.39 million), is to keep the Expo site from danger of fire.

The Linyi fire station is equipped with a six-story fire drill tower and three docks for fire boats to deal with fires on bridges and boats on the Huangpu River.

There will be five fire stations and four temporary locations at the Expo site, to guarantee that "we can get to the scene within two minutes of a fire alarm," said Shanghai Fire Control Bureau official Zhou Meiliang.

A fire at the 1992 Seville Expo destroyed Spain's key pavilion.
