All city swimming pools to open on Friday

ALL swimming facilities will open to the public on Friday and some will open for free, a local sports official said today.

This is to celebrate the one-year countdown for the FINA World Championships to be held in Shanghai, said Chen Yiping, Shanghai Sports Bureau's deputy director.

Part of the celebration will be a swimming competition inviting about 1,000 local residents to participate, he added.

The aquatic event to be held from July 16 to July 31 next year would be the biggest sporting event ever to be held in the city, Chen said.

The total number of competitors and officials coming to the event from as many as 180 countries could surpass 5,000.
