Alleged cop killer driver denies fatal acceleration 'was intentional'

A 32-year-old driver stood trial today in a local court for the sensational case, in which, his car dragged a traffic cop for a distance before he fell to death when he was making an illegal turn downtown.

The case took place on March 11 this year. When Mao Shengquan, the police office on duty then, warned him to stop, Sun Haojie, the driver, accelerated into the crossroads instead. His car dragged the cop for a distance before he finally fell to the ground and died. The junction is one of the busiest on Wuzhong Road, especially during rush hour periods.

Sun has been charged for intentional injury. The court debate today focused on whether the defendant accelerated the vehicle deliberately.

The defendant insisted that he did not realize the situation and did not notice the cop was being dragged by his vehicle when he’s making the turn.

But the prosecutors presented to the court an audio clip collected from his car recorder, which showed a loud noise from an apparent heavy bump could be heard before the car accelerated.

“The traffic cop tried to grab it, and grabbed the frame of his car window. The BMW still travelled at a very fast speed. And then, the cop fell to the ground,” Liu Jinzheng, a driver and eyewitness, said on the court today.
