Amateur meteorologists seek help for family after young member dies

A local amateur meteorology association is asking society to help after one of its members, a 15-year-old boy, died of stomach cancer.

The boy, Qi Liming, was known by his net name Muifa -- the typhoon that attracted him to meteorology in 2011.

Qi had been absent from the online forum for three months earlier this year and an association friend said he later learned the boy had been diagnosed with stomach cancer and had two thirds of his stomach surgically removed.

"He always kept optimistic towards his disease and even during the hospitalization, he communicated with the other amateurs and continued his preparation for the high school entrance examination," Qi's friend, a member of the Chinese Meteorological Amateurs Association, told Shanghai Daily.

Qi's condition worsened in October and he died on Sunday.

"We are worried about Qi's parents, who lost their only child," the friend said.

The association posted Qi's story on its microblog, calling for donations. The post had been forwarded 1,630 times as of noon yesterday.

"He read the postings on our microblog and forum about Typhoon Muifa and showed great interest in its elusive route," the friend said.

Qi joined when he was 12 years old and was among the association’s youngest members, the friend said.

A Shanghai Daily reporter read some of Qi's postings and found he was talented. One of his postings analyzed how tropical cyclones formed in the northwest Pacific Ocean in 2012.

"He was also a brilliant student,” said his friend. “Besides the middle school textbooks, he also read high school geography books and even some university ones."
