Amulet craze attracts those seeking lost loves
VENDERS on taobao.com are cashing in on those desperate to get back together with their ex.
About 563 online stores, of which 30 are Shanghai based, are selling amulets that vendors claim will help people get back with a lost love.
Amulet prices range from 1 yuan (16 US cents) to 20,000 yuan each.
The best-selling store has sold more than 1,953 such amulets in the past 30 days, each priced at 300 yuan. The Taobao store claimed it had made hundreds of thousands of yuan in a month.
According to the store owner, after purchasing an amulet, which you keep, your ex will begin to recall the sweet times you spent together. Fifteen to 49 days later, he or she will start to call or text you before going to bed every night. Once back in touch, you will fall in love with each other again and forget everything unpleasant about the breakup, the store owner claimed.
The vendor also said the amulet loses its power if the owner stops believing it will work.
Other amulets include those said to prevent extramarital affairs.
Many customers believed the amulets helped their wishes come true while others said they did nothing.
Sun Shijin, a psychology professor at Fudan University, said the amulet craze might have something to do with people's selective attention, which refers to a phenomenon that people would only pay attention to things they favor.
"They should be clear about what they want and be positive when facing emotional problems." Sun said.
