An Oxford duo won champion in international debate open
A DUO from Oxford University won the champion at the 3rd Shanghai International Debate Open (SIDO) 2017 over the weekend at the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics.
The 3-day event, co-hosted by the university and the Foreign Language Research and Teaching Press to celebrate the university’s 100th anniversary, attracted more than 170 teams from all over the world and invited 47 renowned judges from home and abroad.
The competitors debated in the British Parliamentary style on various topics, such as whether the parliament should ban all researches that try to produce super strong artificial intelligence, and whether private companies should be allowed to bid for the right to govern parts of their territory.
Finally, Brian Wong and Raphael Marshall from Oxford University won the competition while Marshall was also awarded as the best debater.
“I think the debaters have very very high quality, and obviously I enjoyed debating with them a lot, and competing with them really benefited and educated me a lot,” said Wong, who was the best debater in last year’s competition. “It’s a really educating experience.”
