Angry mothers say diapers cause rash

BABY diapers suspected of being fake products of the Japanese Kao Group brand and sold on Tmall.com are being inspected after local parents said they gave their babies diaper rash, the online retailer said yesterday.

A Shanghai mother identified as mengmengbaobei on Weibo said she bought diapers of Japanese consumer goods producer Kao Group on November 11, only to find her baby had an inflamed bottom.

"I deeply regretted it and felt I did not fulfil the responsibility of a good mother," she said, adding that she suspected the product was fake upon opening it, but still used it.

Angry mothers demanded a response from the online shop known as Senmiao.

The shop said there was no problem in its product supply channel and showed reports and customs clearance documents to prove it.

Tmall.com, operated by Alibaba Group, said the mothers confused the shop name of Senmiao and Yingzhibao as they sell the same type of the baby diaper, but asked both shops to suspend operations and check its products.

Senmiao said its products had already been sent by Tmall.com for checks and it would invite five mothers to send the diapers to quality inspection institutes of their choice.

Fees will be covered by the shop and the process broadcast live online, it said.
