Another first for Shanghai 鈥 auction of horses

In another significant first for the city, Shanghai will hold its first-ever auction of top quality horses with bidding for the 13 large hoofed mammal starting from 60,000 yuan (US$9,804).

The auction is part of the Shanghai International Horse Industry Exhibition being held at the Shanghai East Asia Exhibition Hall since yesterday.

Six of the 13 horses to be auctioned have been bred in China. The others have been brought from the Netherlands and Denmark, according to Shanghai International Commodity Auction Co, which is responsible for the auction.

The company said it had the certificates to prove the ancestry of the horses.

Visitors can find as many as 30 horses at the exhibition, including the 13 put up for sale. Some of the horses were put through their paces by professional riders.

Three Andalusian horses from Germany and an 80cm-tall pony  were the star attractions, especially among them youngsters. Some of the imported breed are priced over 500,000 yuan.

The organizers said many of the horses on show this year were raised in Shanghai. Horse ownership is on the rise, thanks to the promotion of equestrianism in the city over the last few years. Previously, the organizers had to get them from northern cities like Beijing.

A 10-year-old warmblood horse from Denmark is among the horses to be auctioned.

Her profile lists the details of her 34 ancestors.

Her father is Come Back II, a famous Danish stallion.

Pedigree is a key factor in judging the value of a horse.

“To buy a horse is a kind of investment,” said an official of the auction company. “Those with potential can win big prize money in equestrian events through proper training.”

The domestically bred species is priced between 60,000 yuan and 80,000 yuan, while the foreign bred horses cost between 200,000 yuan to 350,000 yuan.
