Another man holds standoff on roof at Expo
THE second suicide attempt in two nights took place at the World Expo site last night.
At midnight yesterday, a man was still atop the South Korean Pavilion on the Pudong side of the Expo, wandering around and threatening the police who were coming to take him off the building that he would jump off the pavilion.
The middle-aged man, in a white t-shirt and black pants, was first seen there around 5:30pm.
On Thursday, a man lingering on the outside viewing platform of the Expo Culture Center was stopped by the police after hours' persuasion.
The Expo bureau said in a statement that "people must resort to normal channels to solve disputes instead of taking an aggressive approach."
"The good order of the Expo site should be maintained."
The South Korea Pavilion closed at 6pm yesterday as the man wandered on the rooftop saying nothing. Staff workers told visitors that the pavilion was closed for facility problems. And they promised the anxious visitors the pavilion will be open this morning.
Police officers cordoned off a small area where the man was trying to jump. Five or six fire engines stood by.
Some visitors gathered to watch the man walking on the stair-like rooftop. One griped it was just "a lousy show."
On Thursday, a man climbed over the safety barriers on the sixth floor of the Expo Culture Center's viewing platform and landed outside the shell-shaped center at 5:20pm, police said.
He said he was upset by a dispute back to his home town in southern China. Police talked him out of his suicide attempt at 10:53pm.
Police said the offenders would be punished, but did not disclose what the punishment would be. Normally, offenders are subject to short-time detention and fines for disturbing public order.
