Appeals as hit-and-run victim faces paralysis

THE family of an elderly scooter rider who may be left paralysed after being struck by a hit-and-run driver have joined police in appeals for witnesses.

The 69-year-old man, surnamed Shen, suffered serious neck injuries in the incident at around 9am last Wednesday on Yishan Road, near Kaixuan Road.

He was still in intensive care in a local hospital yesterday. The elderly man cannot move his legs and doctors fear he may be left partially paralyzed.

Police have put up posters in the street in the area, calling for witnesses to come forward.

And Shen's son has posted a microblog on weibo.com making a similar appeal. It had been reposted about 1,000 times by last night but not yielded any leads.

Shen had just passed Kaixuan Road when he was knocked off his scooter from behind, said his son.

The impact left him unconscious, but the driver fled the scene.

Two passers-by called the emergency services, but neither saw the vehicle that hit Shen.
