Argentine couple's pet peeve
AN Argentine couple arriving from Hong Kong by train and carrying a pet hamster was stopped by Shanghai quarantine officials yesterday. One of them had to take the hamster back to Hong Kong.
Quarantine officials found the small animal in their bag as the foreigner duo, who work in Shanghai, was checked at the customs yesterday morning.
The couple was told that they either had to take their pet back to Hong Kong or dump it under Chinese rules. So the man took another train back to Hong Kong.
An increasing number of foreign passengers have been caught bringing pets into China in recent years, according to the Shanghai Entry-Exit Inspection and Quarantine Bureau.
Chinese law forbids passengers from bringing animals, except dogs and cats, into the territory. Dog and cat owners are required to show quarantine certificates from their country of departure. Moreover, each passenger can bring in only one dog or cat with them.
