Arrest in gold bar heist
THE man who allegedly robbed a store with a fake gun and got away with a gold bar in suburban Jinshan District has been captured after four days on the lam, city police said yesterday.
The suspect, surnamed Wei, smashed a counter and grabbed what he thought were six bold bars from a store in a supermarket in Jinshan's Tinglin Town last Saturday night, police said. Five of the six bars were fakes, used by the store for display, while one was real and worth about 20,000 yuan (US$3,126). Witnesses said the man waved a gun-shaped object when threatening the store assistant about 8:05pm last Saturday.
The 21-year-old suspect was caught on Wednesday in his residence in a work dormitory in Tinglin. Police later found the loot in a garbage bin thrown away by the robber, who had discovered that most of his take was made with wood and iron tubes.
Wei told the police he "learned the rob method from movies." Wei, who came from out of town, said he found a job in a factory in Jinshan but soon ran out of money after failing to get paid in time.
Wei said he "hesitated twice before making up my mind" as there were many customers in the store at first.
In his haste after the heist, the suspect dropped the bars onto the ground as he fled but picked them up.
