Arrest in killing, cutting up of woman

A man has been arrested and charged with killing and dismembering his ex-wife a month ago, city police said yesterday.

The suspect, surnamed Zheng, killed the woman, surnamed Rao, over a family dispute and cut the body in pieces at home, police allege. The body parts were found in plastic bags in a greenery near a residential complex on July 14 in Baoshan District.

Police said a city sanitation worker first discovered a suspicious black plastic bag in the area on Changlin Road in the morning and found a human leg inside. In a search of the greenery area and a nearby river, police found more body parts wrapped inside five similar black plastic bags. In total, police said, they found ten such black bags.

Officers said the woman's face "was hard to distinguish." Officers issued notices via TV, newspaper and online to other police departments nationwide. But it was an area surveillance camera that provided the biggest clue, as it showed a middle-aged man on a tricycle in the area the night before the body parts were found.

Meanwhile police traced the bags to a supermarket and found a sales record of 10 such bags on July 13. The clues led to the suspect's seizure in a complex in Hongkou District last Friday, police said.

Zheng told officers that the two were divorced but still lived together. The two argued often after their second son was born in 2008, Zheng said, adding that his ex-wife "was mentally unstable then."

The two had a big fight on July 13 and Zheng hammered the woman to death before leaving the body parts in Baoshan, police said.
