Arrest over rape and robbing of prostitute

A MAN has been arrested for allegedly raping and robbing a prostitute.

The suspect, surnamed Chen, told Pudong New Area prosecutors that he visited the prostitute because relations with his wife had cooled.

He didn't find the woman attractive and decided to rape and rob her, prosecutors said.

Chen, 37, a Hunan Province native, had worked in a local research institute after obtaining a master's degree. But his unhappy marriage affected Chen's work, and he quit his job and became addicted to the Internet.

In April, after receiving an online message, Chen arranged to meet a woman, surnamed Hu, in Pudong.

Finding her unattractive, he left, but returned with a knife, robbed Hu of 300 yuan (US$46) and a cellphone and raped her, prosecutors said.

Hu contacted police and Chen was brought in for questioning two days later.
