Arrests made over audio porn
FOUR people, including the general manager of China's biggest audio-material Website, were arrested on Monday for producing pornographic audio books and selling them online, the Shanghai Public Security Bureau said yesterday.
City police approved the arrest of a Shanghai native surnamed Gong, 30, the general manager of ilisten.cn, for allegedly making a profit by spreading pornography. Other suspects in custody include two of Gong's employees - a local in charge of the company's technical department, and an Anhui Province native who worked in the department. A 23-year-old Shandong Province woman surnamed Ma was caught in Beijing. She was allegedly hired to record some of the audio books, police said.
Ilisten.cn, a Shanghai-based Website that offers audio content, had more than 500,000 registered users across China and abroad.
Last year, Gong allegedly told the director of the technical department, surnamed Zhang, to increase the Website's traffic by providing pornographic audio downloads, police said.
Zhang started a feed called "Night Talk," where users could download pornographic fiction.
"Users had to pay for each episode," said Bai Hongwei, an officer on the case. The Website made more than 40,000 yuan (US$5,860) last year with 17 pornographic audio books - a total of 953 episodes.
"Most Websites in Shanghai know that porn production is a line you can never cross," said officer Fu Bin. "But in this case, suspects thought porn audio was hard to detect. Traditional porn content including videos, photos and search terms are easy for censors to find and block."
The Website recruited female broadcasters from across China, paying them 40 yuan an hour. Ma, a broadcasting graduate, read four stories as a part-time job, police said.
Netizens were also encouraged to upload home-made porn stories, and offered a share of the profits, Bai said.
The "Night Talk" stories got 2 million hits last year, and were downloaded 260,000 times, Bai said.
