Auction raises money for underprivileged children

A charity auction in celebration of the 105th anniversary of International Women's Day reportedly raised more than 450,000 yuan (US$72,675) for poor and sick children and their families, the Shanghai Women's Federation said.

Consular Spouses Shanghai and the federation co-hosted the auction.

More than 80 items designed by renowned designers from different countries were auctioned earlier this week.

The items included a precious emerald from Colombia, an embroidered cotton dress from South Africa, a butterfly pin from Spain, a Delvaux handbag from Belgium and a sequined cocktail dress from Ireland.

The cotton dress had a starting price of 1,000 yuan and sold for 18,000 yuan.

The money raised from the auction will be given to the Shanghai Children's Foundation.
