'Auntie Bai' criticized over donation scold

SHANGHAI TV show mediator Bai Wanqing - "Auntie Bai" to her fans - faced criticism yesterday for trying to shame a pedestrian into donating to charity.

The incident happened on Saturday, when Bai was collecting at Jing'an Park for the Shanghai Charity Foundation.

Bai, who is also a deputy to the Shanghai People's Congress, asked a passerby to donate at least 1 yuan (15 US cents), but the man refused.

The problem solver said the man looked as though he could afford 1 yuan, and scolded him.

She said: "You don't want to donate even 1 yuan, you are such a loser! You will be a loser for your whole life!"

Passers-by photographed of the pair arguing and uploaded them on to the Internet. This led to debate on whether people should be pressurized into donating to charity.

"Donations should come from one's free will," said web user Xixi. "Otherwise, it's no different to robbery."

Bai, however, was unrepentant. "What I've said is, of course, right," she told Shanghai Daily yesterday.

"If a man is not willing to donate even 1 yuan when he can afford to, how can he be useful?"
