Authorities: half of school uniforms fail quality test

HALF of the student uniforms checked by the city's quality watchdog failed inspection due to excessive formaldehyde, and substandard fiber content and description, the Shanghai Quality and Technical Supervision Bureau said yesterday.
The bureau checked 41 batches of student uniform products made by 21 companies and 21 batches of uniforms were disqualified, it said.
Shirts produced by the Shanghai Tianjun Clothing Co Ltd in January were found to contain 135 milligrams of formaldehyde per kilogram, far above the national limit of 75 mg/kg, while three batches of products were found to contain less cotton than the national standard.
Excessive formaldehyde can cause headaches, dermatitis, eczema and, in large enough doses, malignant tumors and leukemia.
