Baby boy abandoned because of his ears
A HEALTHY baby born with deformed ears is being cared for in a local hospital after he was found abandoned.
The boy is one month old, doctors said yesterday.
He was found at around 5am yesterday in Xuhui District. He was lying on a grass area, fast asleep, when he was spotted by passersby.
They looked around to see if his parents were nearby but eventually called the police.
Doctors at the Shanghai No. 8 People's Hospital said the baby was in good health but his ears were closed and just appear as two bulges.
They had still to carry out checks to determine if there was any deformity inside the baby's ears.
"We are not sure whether the baby has normal acoustic nerves before further examinations," said Wu Qinfang, a doctor with the hospital's pediatrics department.
"Surgery will help rebuild the ear structures, but our hospital is not able to do the surgery," she added.
"If he goes to a children's home, the home can find another hospital for him to do the surgery."
The baby is being looked after by two nursing assistants and nurses check his condition regularly.
His clothes and a large pile of diapers left by his side when he was abandoned were the only clues for police to find his relatives.
"We hope that his parents can come to take him back home," Wu said. "After all it's too cruel to leave such a small baby alone."
After further checks at the hospital the baby will be sent to a children's home, probably in three to five days, doctors said.
The hospital, which takes in any abandoned babies found in Xuhui District, said the latest arrival was the fourth to be admitted this month.
