Baby traffickers apprehended
JIADING District police have caught two people trafficking babies and rescued two infants, officers said yesterday.
One mother, from Anhui Province, arrived in Shanghai yesterday to reclaim her one-month-old son, while police are still trying to contact the family of the other baby.
Police were tipped off on July 2 that a non-local man was asking residents in a village whether they need a baby. The suspect allegedly intended to sell a new-born boy for 130,000 yuan (US$19,000).
Police monitored the suspect Ren Jiating and picked him up in a hotel the next day with his accomplice Xie Changcui while they were making a deal to sell the baby.
The two allegedly admitted they recently bought the baby from Chen Yibing in Songjiang District for 12,000 yuan. Police then caught Chen and informed the baby's mother to pick up her son.
The mother, who was an orphan and had been abandoned by her lover just after the birth of her son, was having troubles and couldn't even afford milk powder for her baby.
She wanted to give her baby to a rich family and asked her friend Chen to find such a family. She didn't expect that Chen would sell the baby to the child traffickers Ren and Xie, who posed as a couple.
She came to the police station to take her son back home yesterday. She hugged her son tightly and said she would never send him away again.
Police also learned that the two suspects had bought and sold another boy in Anhui Province before this case.
They went to Anhui Province where they caught the people suspected of buying the baby and rescued the child. The boy is being cared for by local doctors while police try to reach his family.
