Back after 13 years
AFTER spending 13 years in Europe working illegally and begging, a Chinese man was repatriated yesterday, Shanghai border police said. The man, surnamed Zhou, is a Zhejiang Province native who stowed away to Europe in 1999 to "make big money," said police. But he failed to find suitable jobs and lost contact with his family.
Zhou told the police he decided to return home last year but had no money to buy flight tickets. Starting in September Zhou said he tried to walk home while carrying a world map. For seven months, he begged along the journey and found food from garbage. He fainted while crossing the border of an Eastern European country and was sent back, police said. Officers said the man boarded a long-distance bus home yesterday.
