Back from dead ... facing charges
A MAN alleged to have forged cremation documents to fake his own death and escape a police warrant has been detained by Shanghai police.
The 35-year-old, surnamed Wu, is now set to face a renewed charged that had been nullified on his "death," police said yesterday.
In 2006, Wu, with two accomplices, imprisoned a victim for 48 hours over a gambling debt dispute and beat him, police said.
Local prosecutors would relaunch an accusation of unlawful detention.
The accusation was withdrawn after police were duped into believing he was dead.
In March, police tracked Wu in Jinshan District, based on a tip-off from acquaintances.
In 2008, Wu allegedly forged an identification card and lived under his new identity in Jiangsu Province.
In 2010, he allegedly forged documents for his old identity to say he was dead and cremated at a funeral parlor, and mailed these to his father.
The warrant for Wu was subsequently canceled.
