Bad urban management staff to go

MINHANG District government plans to eliminate bad and incompetent members of its urban management team in response to accusations of employees beating vendors, a government press release said yesterday.

Meanwhile, local greenery and public sanitation authorities are drafting regulations stipulating what is required of the urban management officers and assistants.

The five suspects who attacked a 28-year-old street vendor in the district's Huacao Town on July 11 were not formal urban management staff but assistants hired by the town government, district government officials said.

On July 11, the team tried to take Peng Lin's watermelons but he resisted. He was beaten and suffered bruising to the brain and a spinal injury. Doctors fear he may paralysed.

Huacao Town, where the attack happened, has five formal urban management officers but hired almost 100 people to assist them.

The district government says all towns and sub-districts will have to win district government approval before hiring assistants.
