Basketball team composed of autistic children set up in China
THE nation’s first basketball team consisting of autistic children was set up in Shanghai to encourage these children to participate in social activities and call for more social support and awareness on the disorder and this group, said experts today, the World Autism Awareness Day.
Autism Spectrum Disorder describes a range of conditions classified as neurodevelopmental disorders featuring deficits in social communication and interaction and restricted and repetitive patterns of behavior.
The incidence in the United States is one in every 68 8-year-old children, while there are over 10 million such children in China.
Led by Children’s Hospital of Fudan University, a national project on autism diagnosis and treatment has conducted screening on 140,000 children and set up a database for autistic children for research. The hospital also launched early intervention for highly risky children and promoted training for medical staff and family with autistic children.
“The basketball team is another trial to improve autistic children’s social capability and set up network for such families,” said Dr Wang Yi, vice president of the hospital. “Doctors, volunteers and medical social workers will give one-to-one guidance and sports rehabilitation for these children. We hope our team can be a model to encourage other cities to set up such teams to help more autistic children.”
Families with autistic children said the basketball team is very helpful.
“My 10-year-old grandson is a typical autistic child with stubborn and bad temper. Playing basketball with other children and volunteers can relive his temper and good for his development,” said a woman surnamed Chen.
