Batches of grain and related products fail Shanghai quality inspections

Seven batches of grain and grain products failed quality checks in the second quarter, according to the Shanghai Food and Drug Administration.

The Shanghai FDA checked 625 batches of grain, edible oil, chips and puffed food. Only seven batches failed to meet standards. In most cases the products that failed tests had excessive microorganisms.

The failed products included a cooked pork lunch box with excessive bacteria that was sold at a 7-11 and a Shanghai Nissin shrimp flavored instant noodles detected with coli group.

The authority also checked 911 batches of meat and meat products with 36 failing the test. Most failed batches were cooked foods with excessive bacteria counts.

An inspection of 290 batches of vegetables, fruits and fruit products detected four batches with pesticide residue and one hawthorn product with excessive benzoic acid, a food additive.

All unqualified food was removed from stores. Producers and sellers of unsafe food will be punished, the FDA said.
