Big future for shoppers' paradise
SICHUAN Road N. is already regarded as one of Shanghai's leading shopping areas, but it is about to become even bigger and better.
Hongkou District government officials said yesterday the commercial area would be both enlarged and upgraded.
The 3.7-kilometer-long Sichuan Road N. in downtown Hongkou will be expanded to a 2.4-square-kilometer multifunctional commercial area that includes shopping malls, high-end office buildings and leisure facilities.
The expansion of the area will account for about 10 percent of the entire district by 2015, according to a development plan.
The planned commercial area will extend from northern Dalian Road W. to Suzhou Creek in the south.
About 1.2 million square meters of new business and commercial buildings will have been established in the new area by the time the 2010 World Expo begins next May.
About 500,000 square meters of new constructions will be completed by the end of this year.
According to the development plan, there will be 90,000 business people, almost double the current number, working in the office area and five rail lines servicing the zone by 2015.
The commercial area will be divided into three parts.
The northern section, including Hongkou Football Stadium, Lu Xun Park, and Duolun Road, will focus on sports and leisure facilities.
The middle section will be built into a large shopping area with malls like the present Dongbao Department Store and future projects Jiajie International Square and CITIC Square.
The southern part, nearest to the North Bund central business district area, will feature high-end businesses.
