Biggest illegal dorm complex emptied in Putuo
THE biggest illegal dorm complex in Putuo District was emptied by Friday out of safety concern, the district's fire department said on Saturday, adding that more than 1,500 residents had been asked to move out of the complex.
The authority said the complex, near Xincun Road Metro Station, has six buildings, covering an area of 9,600 square meters, with 567 rooms available for rent and 510 of them leased out already. It was also an illegal residential venue with the largest number of rooms for lease in the district.
The authority said the building was originally a factory and the land was registered for industrial purpose. However, the dorms' operator changed the complex’s structure to serve residential purpose without being approved, the authority said.
The rooms, each of some 20 square meters, were usually shared by four to five tenants. The rent for a room was between 1500 yuan (US$218) and 2500 yuan a month.
