Biggest online gambling case for court

THE city's biggest online soccer gambling case, involving 20 suspects and more than 6.6 billion yuan (US$965 million) worth of stakes, is to be heard soon by the Putuo District People's Court.

A date has yet to be decided.

The suspects, headed by local natives Qian Baochun, 41, and Zou Jun, 45, have been charged with operating gambling clubs by prosecutors of the Shanghai No. 2 Intermediate Prosecutors' Office.

Prosecutors say the gang earned illegal profits of more than 1.6 million yuan from August 2006 to May 2008.

Qian and Zou applied for accounts from overseas soccer gambling Websites in 2006 and started their illegal business during the World Cup in Germany, according to prosecutors.

Qian and Zou developed a network of agents and gamblers and also hired people to maintain their Websites, open gambling accounts and make settlements with gamblers and agents, Qian told prosecutors.

In March 2007, the Luwan District People's Court announced verdicts in an online soccer gambling case involving 5.25 billion yuan in stakes.

The head of gang, Ren Bin, was sentenced to seven years in prison, and another five members were jailed for between one year and four and a half years.

At that time, it was the largest case of its kind in the city, officials said.
