Birds of a feather flock to Shanghai

LARGE flocks of coot have flown into Shanghai for the first time to spend the winter at wetlands on Hengsha Island.

A record of nearly 30,000 birds of 16 species have been seen in the east coast bird protection zone during the peak migration season, today's Shanghai Morning Post reported.

Among them are 22,000 coots, a member of the rail and crake bird family, the rallidae. Last year, only a few of the species were seen in Shanghai.

Zoologists attributed this year's bird increase to the city government's effective ecological protective measures and strict penalties for poachers.

The worst case was cracked in December 2007 when 137 birds were found poisoned.

Last year wetlands staff caught a poacher who had poisoned 64 wild ducks. He was jailed for eight months.
