Blast kills couple in their home

A COUPLE was killed when a blast set fire to their rented apartment in Minhang District yesterday.

Flames rose several stories high as the blaze swept through the 20-square-meter ground-floor flat, said witnesses who alerted firefighters and police. Firefighters found the couple inside the apartment. They were pronounced dead after being pulled out. Both were in their 30s and from Jiangxi Province.

Firefighters also removed eight liquefied gas canisters from the apartment, which possibly prevented further explosions.

Neighbors said the couple had moved in a month ago. They were regularly seen moving gas canisters in and out of the flat, said neighbors, who added that they could often smell gas in the area.

The police didn't release the result of their investigation.

Also yesterday, a power blackout hit hundreds of households in Pudong New Area after a dump truck accidentally snapped an electricity line on Dongfang Road.

The back of the dump truck popped up and severed a power line, witnesses said.

Police are questioning the driver to determine whether the accident was a mechanical problem or human error.

Repair workers were still fixing the power line as of late yesterday.
