Blaze compensation revealed

THE official compensation plan for people left homeless by last November's deadly high-rise blaze was announced yesterday.

Under the plan, victims can chose one of the three options - the repair of their original home, a new home, or a lump sum of money, the Jing'an District government said.

Under the first option, households would move back to their old apartments after redecoration.

The second option would see residents given apartments near the gutted high-rise. These are due to be completed in three years.

Under the third option, they would receive 1.7 times the price of their apartment.

The value of the damaged homes will be estimated according to market prices, and costs will be met by the state-owned Shanghai Jing'an Construction Co, the contractor for the building renovation project held responsible for the fire.

The inferno swept through a residential building on Jiaozhou Road on November 15, claiming 58 lives and leaving 71 injured.
