Blaze in downtown high-rise

TWO elderly residents were injured in a fire that swept their apartment in a high-rise in downtown Shanghai's Huangpu District yesterday.

A man and a woman suffered slight injuries and were treated in hospital.

The fire happened about 3:30pm on the sixth floor of a 23-floor residential building on Yan'an Road E. in Huangpu District, near the elevated road.

A security guard said he first found smoke coming from the window and called the fire department.

Witnesses said one man was carried out on a stretcher and another woman was carried on the shoulders of firefighters.

The fire was put out within 20 minutes and did not spread to other areas.

Other sources said four elders in total were sent to hospital for checks or treatment. The city fire authority was still investigating the cause.

Meanwhile two vehicles caught fire in an accident yesterday morning on a highway in suburban Minhang District.

A van hit the trailer of a truck carrying wood about 9:40am on Puxing Highway leading to the Xupu Bridge. Drivers and passengers escaped as the vehicles and the wood caught fire. Traffic was affected for about an hour.
