Blind man killed in early morning house fire

A 63-year-old blind man was killed in a fire that broke out in his apartment early this morning. His daughter and blind wife managed to escape.

The fire occurred at about 3:15am when they were sleeping in their 9-square-meter room at 155 Liaoning Road.
The man suffered from strokes and had difficulty to move. He died in the house but his wife and his 19-year-old daughter escaped unscathed.

The fire was put out at 4am. Two nearby homes were flooded by water cannons.

Their room was a second-floor attic in a shabby tenement house built in the 1920s, a neighborhood official said.
Police are still investigating the cause of the fire. Local authorities are arranging accommodations for families affected by the fire.

Time-worn electric wires in old houses often cause short-circuit and fire that spreads quickly in wood-and-brick structures.
