A NATIONWIDE hypertension measurement and education program kicked off in Shanghai, led by experts from Ruijin Hospital today, the World Hypertension Day.
The project, May Measurement Month Campaign, is a part of a global activity to measure blood pressure for 25 million people in 100 countries. China will fulfill the goal of measuring 2.5 million people.
“We will do blood pressure measurement for 2.5 million people, who haven’t received measurement in the past one year,” said Dr Wang Jiguang, head of Shanghai Hypertension Research Institute based in Ruijin Hospital. “We will set up ten measurement spots in every 100 countries, towns and districts in the nation and fulfill the entire task within 25 days.”
Experts said the campaign is to set up a big database for hypertension research, arouse public awareness on hypertension, improve the rate of treatment and raise regional medical professionals’ ability in public hypertension management.
“Through the campaign, we want to have 70 percent of the public know about hypertension from the current 30 percent and finally have 50 percent of hypertension people keep their blood pressure stable from the current 12 percent,” Wang added.
There are over 200 million people with hypertension in China.
