Boating tragedy: Compensation agreement

THE family of a Shanghai girl who died in a boating accident during the Dragon Boat Festival on Qiandao Lake of Zhejiang Province has reached a compensation agreement worth 810,000 yuan (US$118,421) with a boat company, Xinmin.net reported today.

The family will get 140,000 yuan as an insurance payout and another 670,000 yuan for compensation including funeral costs, said the Chun'an tourism bureau which mediated the compensation agreement.

Ye Fei, a female student from Shanghai Normal University, was killed on the lake in Chun'an County on May 28. Another tourist from Anhui Province on the same boat was pronounced brain dead two days later. Twelve others were injured.

Ye's family had asked for 1.8 million yuan, nearly three times the 620,000-yuan offered by the company. Ye, 22, had gone to Qiandao Lake with a classmate for the three-day Dragon Boat Festival.

Boat driver, Yu Wuming, has been detained after the local maritime authority said he was mainly responsible for the accident, though both drivers were negligent. Yu's larger boat ran into the boat Ye was traveling on.

The tourism bureau is continuing to meditate compensation agreements for the injured tourists.
