Bogus tenant robs homeowner in Songjiang

A robber who pretended to be an interested tenant has been captured after stealing money, a smartphone and a laptop from a homeowner on February 2, Songjiang District police said yesterday.

The robbery took place when the victim surnamed Zou was showing her apartment to the man surnamed Yang. As the two were about to sign a rental contract, Yang suddenly pulled out a knife and extorted money from Zou. He then tied her up and took away valuables worth 7,000 yuan (US$1,123).

Yang fled the city immediately but was tracked down two days later in Zhumadian, Henan Province by Shanghai and Henan police.

Police said similar robberies are on the rise. The criminals pretend to be the salesman, residence registration official, prospective tenant, utility meter reader or deliveryman to gain access to the victim's house. Police advised homeowners to meet a potential tenant at a real estate agency to avoid risks.
