Boy drowns as father's taxi falls into river

The 10-year-old son of a taxi driver drowned after his father's car fell into a river in Chongming County yesterday.
The cabbie, however, survived and is undergoing treatment at a nearby hospital, the Oriental Morning Post reported today.
Witnesses said the taxi lost control when it was about to leave a bridge in Luhua Township and plunged into the 20-meter-wide river about 5:30pm yesterday.
Witnesses saw the driver and a boy in school uniform in the car when the vehicle went crashing into the water, the report said. They immediately alerted police.
When police and firemen arrived at the scene, the car was submerged but the driver had managed to climb onto the riverbank. The firemen dived into the river to rescue the boy but could not break open the window due to water pressure, the report said.
The cab was pulled out of the water about 90 minutes later and paramedics pronounced the boy dead on the scene.
Police investigation is continuing.
