Bridge crash kills 1, injures 4 S. Koreans

A CHINESE driver was killed and four South Korean passengers were injured when a van collided with a truck on Donghai Bridge on Tuesday afternoon, Shanghai police said yesterday.

The injured are in stable conditions in a local hospital.

The cause of the accident is still being investigated although police officers said driver fatigue may have been a factor.

The accident happened about 1:50pm, police said.

The foreigners were in the van, which crashed into the back of a container truck, officers said.

The driver died at the scene, police said.

The injured were sent to a hospital in Pudong and admitted at 3:08pm, according to the hospital.

Medical staff who can speak Korean accompanied the injured, the hospital said.

Officers said the weather and road conditions were fine at the time of the accident.

The damaged vehicles were towed away and traffic was not affected, police added.

In February, three people were killed and 15 others injured in a more than 20 car pile-up on Donghai Bridge. Heavy fog was blamed for the accident.
