Builders blamed for cracks
RESIDENTS in a downtown complex claim huge cracks appeared on the walls of their buildings and in the ground after builders began digging foundations for high-rises nearby.
Although they say construction workers offered to fill the cracks, residents fear these will simply be replaced by new ones as work continues around the clock despite complaints.
One resident, surnamed Huang, said she was afraid when the ground cracked open with a sound "like firecrackers."
Another resident, Zhang Weidong, who lives in Building No. 6, showed long cracks on the walls of his apartment and balcony. "We want them to stop as soon as possible," he said.
Zhang said the cracks have appeared because building work is too close to the complex. The 9-meter-deep foundations are 2 meters from the complex. But plans indicated that they should be at least 4.7 meters, said Zhang.
An official with the real estate company, surnamed Jin, said yesterday that an inspection by Huangpu District housing officials concluded the damage was not the company's fault.
Zhang said this was at odds with what the real estate official told residents.
"On Tuesday, Jin admitted to us that the cracks had something to do with them," said Zhang. "His attitude is very different now."
