Burned boy, 2, rushed to hospital with police escort

A TWO-YEAR-OLD boy was scalded by boiling water at home in the Pudong New Area yesterday morning and is now in stable condition after being rushed to burn specialists at Shanghai Ruijin Hospital in downtown Huangpu District in a taxi led by a police car.

The boy had burns over 10 percent of his body, mostly his hips and legs, and was treated at Ruijin Hospital, known as the city's best hospital for burns.

Doctors said the burns could caused shock if treatment were delayed.

An official surnamed Cai with the hospital said the boy's injury was not life-threatening.

Pudong police received a call about 8:30am that the severely burned boy was on the way from Liuzao in Pudong to downtown Ruijin Hospital in a taxi. A police car was dispatched to lead the taxi through dense rush-hour traffic to the hospital.

The boy arrived at the hospital in about 30 minutes. The 40-kilometer journey normally takes about an hour.
