Burst water main floods scores of homes
NEIGHBORHOOD committee officials are calculating just how many houses were affected after a water main burst in Zhabei District on Monday night.
An official surnamed Lu with the Diligang Neighborhood Committee, said Shanghai Waterworks will compensate the homes and the committee is working out who was affected and how much damage has been caused.
The repairs are continuing.
"More than 200 homes were affected by the flood ?the exact number will be announced later this week," Lu told Shanghai Daily this afternoon.
Hundreds of homes in Zhabei District were flooded after the water main under Zhongxing Road burst on Monday night. The water flow was stopped early this morning.
The accident happened at about 11:35pm when most residents were sleeping. Homes in low-lying Diligang were immediately flooded. Residents said the water was about 40 centimeters deep at the worst parts.
The incident was under control within two hours and initial investigations suggested it was caused by a road subsidence which put pressure on the water main. An official surnamed Ye said the main was three meters under the road and would take time to fix.
