Bus driver plays hero, chases down thief

A BUS driver was praised after he raced about 100 meters to recover a stolen bag and save the owner from the potential loss of more than 300,000 yuan (US$48,039).

The owner said the bag contained bank cards that could access more than 300,000 yuan, which he was saving to buy a home. He was very thankful the bag was recovered.

The incident happened on Saturday afternoon when bus driver Chen Jian stopped at the Gonghexin Road and Wenshui Road terminal.

Chen said he saw a man with a nervous look carrying a black handbag off the bus.

After the man got off the bus he started to run. Chen ran after him and stopped him before the man entered a nearby subway station.

The man gave up the bag and ran off, said Chen, who later returned the bag to the owner.

Bus operators said theft cases are fairly common.

In another recent case, a bus driver Liu Gencun stopped a passenger from taking an elderly man's wallet left on a No. 958 bus. The wallet turned out to belong to author Cao Keji.

The bus company said the driver will be rewarded.
