Bus driver pulls over safely while having a stroke

A BUS driver collapsed at the wheel yesterday morning but not before he pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road.

No one was injured in the incident and the driver is being treated for a stroke at Huadong Hospital, according to bus company officials.

Liu Yinbao, 52, had a stroke while driving a No. 13 bus along Changning Road near Jiangsu Road about 8:20am. He pulled the bus over to the roadside before fainting. He was sent to the hospital by passengers.

"He is a responsible driver," said one of Liu's colleagues, surnamed Gong, who visited Liu in hospital after learning of the incident.

Gong said Liu has been a bus driver for many years.

Liu had surgery yesterday but was still unconscious. He was in the intensive care unit last night and doctors were not available for comment.

Gong said Liu may have been exhausted due to work pressure and lack of sleep.

According to Gong, Liu usually woke up at 2:30am and fueled the bus at 3:40am before setting out on his route.

Other colleagues said the hot weather may have contributed to Liu's condition.
