Bus drivers served notices for driving on non-bus lanes

THE city police have embarked on a campaign to educate bus drivers to stick to road lanes reserved for buses amid complaints that they were competing with other vehicles for lanes.

At the busy Changning and Kaixuan roads junction near Zhongshan Park, the traffic police stopped three buses within half an hour on Wednesday morning and served notices to the drivers.

“We hope you can take full advantage of the lanes reserved for you, especially during peak hours, and don’t mix with vehicles in other lanes,” the note read.
One of the drivers told Shanghai Daily he wasn’t aware that there were bus-only lanes on Changning Road. There were six lanes in each direction with four straight lanes, and the lane most removed from the junction was marked with yellow dotted lines reserved for public transportation.

“I didn’t think of taking the [bus-only] lane because I had been driving on the lane I was on and switching lanes would have been a waste of time,” the driver of No. 737 bus said. But he promised to take the bus-only lanes in the future.

Xu Wei, captain of the Changning Traffic Police Mobile Team, said while other vehicle drivers are fined 50 yuan (US$8) for driving on bus lanes, bus drivers are not fined for using lines not meant for them.

But Xu said handing out notices has helped in bringing down the number of cases of bus drivers not sticking to their lanes.

“At the end of last year, there were 20 to 30 such cases within an hour,” he said. “We will continue the campaign to improve traffic flows.”
